Rationale for the Programme

The Bachelor of Education Integrated Early Childhood Development (B Ed IECD) programme articulates from the Diploma in Integrated Early Childhood Development curriculum.  It is intended to upgrade the qualification of practitioners in Early Childhood Settings. The programme is suitable for individuals who aspire to become managers or supervisors in various settings for early learners. The qualification equips learners with outcome based education  which is employed through varied learning experiences to equip students with knowledge and skills of a life long learner so that the practitioners can respond effectively to the needs in the early years settings any where across the globe. The learners are expected to vigorously engage with theory, research and demonstrate professional experience skills.

Programme Courses Synopsis

  1. TL 711 - The Teacher as a Life-Long Learner

The aim of this course is to provide in-service students with the required study skills so that they become autonomous and develop their own life-long learning process

  1. HS 711 - Health and Safety in Schools

The aim of this course is to inform in-service students of the importance of health and safety in the school as an organization so that they may maintain and promote the health and safety of pupils as their own. Workshops on child protection and law will increase the in-service students’ awareness of health and safety in early childhood setting.

  1. CC 711- Life Crisis in Childhood

The aim of this course is to provide the in-service students with the techniques of identification of the child in crisis so that they may guide the child until professional help is obtained.

  1. TS 711 – Teaching Of Science And Social Sciences To Young Children

The aim of this course is to provide the students with the knowledge of varied pedagogies in learning science such as observing, questioning, investigating and making a sense of everyday science in ones life.

  1. DM 712 - Learner Discipline Management

The aim of this course is to develop the in-service students into effective classroom managers who have a better and deeper insight into creating a safe and conducive teaching and learning environment. It will also provide the in-service students with proactive and restorative behaviour management strategies in the school environment.

  1. LS 712 – Life Skills for Educators

The United Nations Inter-Agency Meeting in April 1998 generated a broad definition of Life Skills education1: “Life skills education is designed to facilitate the practice and reinforcement of psychosocial skills in a culturally and developmentally appropriate way; it contributes to the promotion of personal and social development, in the prevention of health and social problems, and the protection of human rights.”

  1. MA 712 – Music and Movement Activities

The aim of this course is to produce practitioners who can help the preschooler explore and discover his or her life in the world by music and movement.

  1. RME 212 - Research Methodology in Education

The aim of this course is to provide in-service students with an understanding of the ontological and epistemological issues that underpin the choice of research topic, methodology and methods. To help learners identify a subject worthy and capable of research and to formulate a plan for the implementation of the research process. To expose them to the nature of the research process, including planning and designing a research proposal.

  1. CL 721 - Children Literature

The aim of this course is to equip in-service students with the skills of selection and presentation of literature books and stories that will help them instil the appreciation of stories the culture of reading, through aesthetic, social, emotional, moral and language development.

  1. AP 722- Assessment Practices in Early Childhood Education

The aim of the course is to provide learners with an in-depth knowledge of the purpose, principles, practices and designs of quality assessment and relate these to the promotion of learning.

  1. PP 721- Psycho-Pedagogy

The aim of the module is to help learners understand major theories, features and processes of social, emotional and personal development and to have a better insight into the social-cultural context in which development occurs. To equip the learners with the teaching and instructional skills required to achieve an effective teaching and learning process for early childhood education.

  1. PD 722 - Professional Experience and Development

The aim of the course is to give in-service students opportunities to practice theoretical insights and knowledge in authentic classroom situations so that they grow into an effective reflective practitioner. This provides in-service students the opportunity to prove that they have professionally developed and that they are prepared for effective practice. In-service students will develop portfolio to show their teaching practice and abilities in the primary teaching and learning settings. This requires them to make use of technology, teaching methods and media in teaching. They will also do micro-teaching. Workshops may be organized on the use of virtual classrooms so as to improve the teaching strategies of educators/learners.

  1. LM 722- Leading and Managing in Early Childhood

The module provides learners with an understanding of leadership and management theories so that they may develop effective and sustainable teaching and learning practices and a conducive early childhood development centre for the school personnel.

  1. RD 720 - Dissertation

The research study will allow the in-service students to examine thoroughly an area or a problem related to education. It will draw upon significant concepts and techniques studied during the taught part of the programme and will examine how the student uses his or her theoretical knowledge and insights into educational and teaching practice to contribute to some reflections or new insights into education. The dissertation should be written in the range of 12, 000 to 15,000 words.
