This programme is meant to provide learners with the strategies of adopting inclusive principles in diverse classrooms. To facilitate the practice and reinforcement of psychosocial skills in the multicultural learning environment and to equip in-service students with high quality life skills that will demonstrate relevant knowledge, skills, abilities and attitudes. Also, to impact on and develop lifestyles that will lead to personal success, health and well being of the learners as well as the children in schools. The programme also embraces gender issues as an inclusive aspect of learning.
Programme Courses Synopsis
- HD 711 Human Development and Learning
This course introduces the learner to the concept of Human Development and Learning from childhood to adulthood. It will look at underpinning theories of Human Development and Learning and how they can be implemented in teaching and learning for student development including learners with special needs.
- AT 711 Approaches to Teaching and Learning
This course examines the different approaches of teaching and learning in any subject area within the school curriculum. It examines the contemporary approaches to teaching, including different learning settings, recognized theories and practices which are supported by current research, examining effective ways to engage and support learning; the use of information and communication technologies in teaching and learning and their relevancy to subject area within the curriculum. It plans, designs and develops, relevant lessons, programmes activities and evaluation to foster student interest and determine how specific approaches can be applied across the curriculum, community and wider world.
In this learners will study about a number of issues and elements which relates to learners, specially children with different types of learning difficulties. You will have a broader understanding and better perception of the need to address the issue of children with special educational needs.
- AL 711 Assessment and Learning
This course is designed to help learners to design, implement, analyse and review assessment to enhance student learning. This course cover assessment concepts, principles and processes relating to standards based assessment, interaction, evidence learning domains, instruments and reporting assessment information. The real value of this course to learners is commitment to reflect, conceptualise and apply what is covered in this course to learners’ current or future profession.
- TT 712 Technologies for Teaching and Learning in an inclusive setting
In this course learners will study about technologies for teaching and learning as an important aspect of educating our children of today. Various aspects of technologies for teaching and learning including those with special needs are discussed in this course.
- TP 710 Teaching Practicum
In this course learners will upgrade professional teaching competencies in a variety of learning environment and learners with diverse needs, under the guidance and supervision of school mentors and institution lecturers. In-service students will develop portfolio to show their teaching practice and abilities in the different teaching and learning settings. This requires them to make use of technology, teaching methods and media in teaching. They will also do microteaching. Workshops may be organized on the use of virtual classrooms so as to improve the teaching strategies of educators/learners.
- DM 712 Classroom Management
The aim of this course is to develop learners into effective classroom managers who have a better and deeper insight into creating a safe and conducive teaching and learning environment. It will also provide the in-service learners with proactive and restorative behaviour management strategies in the school environment.
- RME 712 Research Methods
The aim of this course is to provide learners with an understanding of the philosophical issues that underpin the choice of research topic, methodology and methods. To help learners identify a subject worthy and capable of research and to formulate a plan for the implementation of the research process. To expose them to the nature of the research process, including planning and designing a research proposal.
- SI 721 Special & Inclusive Education

- EC/PE/SE 721 Early childhoodEducation
This course is designed to provide teacher learners an education on what a child receives in his or her early years and which has a strong impact on the well-being and the future of the child. It is believed that play has a critical role in determining the child's future. Brain research has confirmed that experiences children have during their first five years of life create important connections in the brain. This course will contribute to establishing a more positive and optimal education on early childhood and the areas of child development.
Improving Professional Practice in Primary/ Secondary Education
This course aims to continuously support student teachers to develop their professional practice, particularly their classroom teaching and review approaches relating to pedagogy, curriculum and assessment in context. It focuses on recent developments in subject-specific teaching that have impacted on professional practice and on how learning occurs and the key roles of processes such as cognitive change, motivation, self-regulation and social influences on knowledge building. You will also learn about designing learning environments that engage learners emotionally, socially, physically, culturally and cognitively, alongwith diversity of backgrounds and experiences of learners. Finally, you will should be able to evaluate teaching practicum and curriculum implementation through evidence-based research and critically reflect on teacher learning and teaching and the identification of implications for professional growth.
- ES 721 Education & Society
The aim of this course is to encourage learners to engage with critical and creative minds by focusing on the processes and products of childhood in the society.
- RD 720 Dissertation
The research study will allow the learners to examine thoroughly an area or a problem related to education. It will draw upon significant concepts and techniques studied during the taught part of the programme and will examine how the student uses his or her theoretical knowledge and insights into educational and teaching practice to contribute to some reflections or new insights into education. The dissertation should be written in the range of 12, 000 to 15, 000 words.
- 722 Gender
The aim of this course is to provide critical thinking and a thorough understanding of women and men as gendered beings, how gender intersects with social and cultural differences and how this negatively impact on sustainable socio economic development. It will equip learners with skills to deal with specific needs of men and women in all sectors of the economy in order to advance gender equality and women empowerment. In addition gender needs to be emphasized to sensitize learners on the issue of inclusion
