Our Commitment to Your Privacy

Botswana Open University (BOU) is committed to protecting the privacy, confidentiality, and security of all personal data in its possession. As a public institution, BOU processes personal information lawfully in accordance with the Botswana Data Protection Act of 2024, administered by the Information and Data Protection Commission (IDPC).

We collect, use, store, and disclose personal data only for legitimate educational and institutional purposes, ensuring that all individuals whose data we hold are treated with dignity, fairness, and transparency. BOU has appointed a dedicated Data Protection Officer (DPO) to oversee compliance and handle all data-related enquiries and requests.

Lawfulness & Fairness
Personal data is collected and processed only on lawful grounds, transparently and fairly, with clear justification for each processing activity.

Accuracy
BOU takes reasonable steps to ensure that personal data is accurate, complete and kept up to date where necessary.
PRINCIPLE 02
Purpose Limitation
Data is collected for specified, explicit and legitimate purposes and not further processed in a manner incompatible with those purposes.
PRINCIPLE 05
Storage Limitation
Personal data is not retained longer than is necessary for the purpose for which it was originally collected, subject to applicable legal retention obligations.
PRINCIPLE 03
Data Minimisation
We collect only personal data that is adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary in relation to the purpose for which it is processed.
PRINCIPLE 06
Security & Integrity
Appropriate technical and organisational measures are implemented to safeguard personal data against unauthorised access, loss, destruction or alteration.

Your Rights as a Data Subject

Under the Botswana Data Protection Act, you have the following rights with respect to your personal information held by BOU:
