Welcome to School of Social Sciences

The School of Social Sciences (SoSS) at Botswana Open University (BOU) was established in 2014/2015 as the third school of the University. In the context of the broad ODL anchored vision and mission of the University, the School of Social Sciences is mandated to offer extensive opportunities for scholarship in the social, and behavioral sciences using ODL principles, approaches and methodologies. The BOU School of Social Sciences is configured to offer at all tertiary levels, a multidisciplinary spectrum of programmes from the Social Sciences and related disciplines and sub disciplines. However, the school is currently being reconfigured to expand its scope by including the Arts and Humanities, thereby facilitating the University’s responsiveness to societal concerns in these disciplines. The school integrates other key scholarly approaches such as multi-disciplinarity, inter-disciplinarity, trans-disciplinarity, and cross-disciplinarity in order to respond to the diverse and evermore complex challenges facing societies of the twenty first century. The multiple fields of study in the school prepare students to think critically about global trends in the discipline of social science. They are prepared to use empiricism to incisively analyse challenges that societies face and develop communities of practice in seeking solutions to those challenges. The school researches society and social groups, social change, and the welfare of communities. It generates new social sciences knowledge that enables it to produce independent critical thinkers who are academically well grounded in macro and micro development practice.

The BOU School of Social Sciences has three departments which are:

- Department of Community Development, Psycho-social and Behavioral Sciences

- Department of Public Administration

- Department of Environmental Studies
