The Bachelor of Social Sciences in Youth Development (BSs-YD) is offered through a blended distance education model that combines online and face-to-face learning. This programme represents a pioneering undergraduate qualification of its kind, originally designed for the Commonwealth Caribbean by the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus in collaboration with the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) Caribbean Center. The BSS-YD programme is specifically designed to address critical skills gaps in youth development practice within Commonwealth countries. With its strong regional and international orientation, the programme equips youth workers serving in government institutions, non-governmental organisations, and community-based groups with standardised professional training.
The BSs-YD programme aims to develop the competencies, knowledge, and practical skills required to effectively respond to the complex and evolving needs of young people, thereby contributing to sustainable social development and improved service delivery within the youth sector. The programme is designed to support both emerging and experienced practitioners by equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and professional capabilities necessary to deliver impactful youth work interventions. Moreover, the programme seeks to contribute to addressing broader developmental challenges affecting young people in Botswana, particularly issues related to low self-esteem, which, as highlighted in the Botswana National Youth Policy (2010), can hinder young people from fully participating in the development process and from becoming responsible and accountable citizens.
