Bachelor of Education in Special and Inclusive Education

The programme is designed to equip student teachers with knowledge, skills and competences that would promote access to relevant, high quality education for learners with Special Educational Needs (SEN). It includes the study of the diverse needs of learners in inclusive schools. Student teachers will be provided with skills to identify learners with special educational needs and select variety of differentiated strategies of teaching, assessing and managing students with special educational needs in regular classes. The student teachers will also be provided with knowledge of policies, guidelines and procedures to guide the implementation of special and inclusive education in regular schools. Hence graduates of this programme will become knowledgeable on basic planning and teaching strategies that support students’ needs to learn effectively irrespective of their gender, age, 17 life circumstances, health, disability and stage of development.

Programme Duration

  • Minimum 2- Maximum 6 years

Programme Requirements

The following requirements shall apply:

  • Certificate 4, NCQF Level 4 (BGCSE or equivalent)
  • Serving teachers with Diploma in Education and two years’ experience will be considered and to join the program at year three.
  • Candidates who do not have the minimum academic qualifications stated above but with a minimum of three years relevant work experience may be considered through Recognition of Prior Learning.

  • Introduction to Inclusive Education (EIIE 711)
  • Introduction to Educational Psychology (EIEP 711)

Semester 2

  • Instructional Methods for Learners with Sensory impairments (ELSI 712)
  • Instructional Methods for Learners with Developmental Disabilities (ELDD 712)
  • Instructional methods for Learners with Physical and health Impairments (EPHI 612)
  • Educational Measurement and Evaluation (EME 712)
