Master of Education in Early Childhood Development (M.Ed. ECD)

The promotion of lifelong learning has enabled today’s learners to dictate their terms of study in line with the increasing demand for competency-based education. The quality of Early Childhood programmes lies mainly in the hands of a special workforce, and BOU intends to ensure the production of such a special workforce by delivering high-quality and innovative programmes that meet market demands. BOU provides innovative programme and services attractive to its prospective students. It is a significant step towards realising Botswana’s vision in 2036 of a creative and innovative knowledge-based economy. Master’s Degree will produce professionally qualified skilled graduates who will deliver using effective pedagogical approaches and can work in a range of early years’ related settings, with a holistic approach.

The M.Ed. ECD programme is designed to:

  • Improve the competency of early childhood professionals who are visionary, resultoriented, and competent professionals to sustain nationally and globally.
  • Strengthen the skills acquired in Bachelor’s Degree and to be more focused in the specialised areas of early childhood thus polishing the skills needed in the global market.

Programme Duration

  • Minimum 2 years, Maximum 5 years

Programme Requirements

The following requirements shall apply:

  • A Bachelor’s degree (NCQF level 7), preferably in Early Childhood/ Child Development or any related field from a recognised Education and Training Provider.
  • Special Entry: Admission may also be based on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), applied on a case-by-case basis as guided by the BOU RPL Policy.
  • Candidates who do not have the minimum academic qualifications stated above but have five years relevant work experience in a related field will be considered upon satisfying the requirements of the School’s Board that might include an entrance interview.

  • Inclusive Pedagogical Approaches for Young Children (EIP912)
