Bachelor of Education - Primary (BEd-Primary)

The Bachelor of Education (Primary Education) qualification is a part-time qualification designed for pre-and in-service teacher trainees to become effective teachers and professionals who can evaluate, analyse and reflect on professional practice in primary school contexts. The programme requires teacher trainees to specialise in the following subject combinations; Sciences (Mathematics and Science), Languages (English and Setswana), and Social Sciences (Social Studies and Religious Education). The programme seeks to equip students’ teachers with pedagogical knowledge on handling teaching and learning for learners in the primary contexts. The qualification has a strong research orientation to enable teacher trainees to be competent in solving literacy, numeracy, and psychosocial problems prevalent in primary schools and their communities. The qualification will contribute to human resource development in the education and training field through retooling and up-skilling of student teachers to achieve the national aspiration as espoused in Vision 2036 of a “Botswana society that will be knowledgeable with relevant quality educatios, skills as well as academic competencies 2016:20. In addition, it aims to promote the quality of teacher training in Botswana and the international space.

Programme Duration

  • The minimum duration for this programme is four years and the maximum is six years.

Programme Requirements

The following requirements shall apply:

  • Certificate IV, NCQF Level 4 (BGCSE or equivalent)
  • Diploma VI, NCQF Level 6 (DPE)
  • Entry application through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and credit accumulation and Transfer (CAT) is allowable through Institutional policies in line with the National RPL & CAT policies.

  • Information Technology Essentials (EITE 711)
  • Introduction to Educational Psychology (EIEP 711)
  • Education Introduction to Inclusive (EIIE 711)

Semester 2

  • Guidance and Counselling (EGC 712)
  • Instructional Methods for Learners with Sensory (ELSI 712)
  • Educational Measurement & Evaluation (EME 712)
  • Business Communication (EBC 712)
