Diploma in Early Childhood Development

The DECE programme aims to train early childhood practitioners by providing trainees with high quality preparedness on relevant issues, debates and theories relating to early childhood development and the required cultural understanding for working with young children, families and communities. The programme engages trainees with current understanding of the theory and practice in children’s care and education services and develops their skills in early childhood development and education in relation to learning and development in general.

Programme Duration

  • Three years for a BGCSE Certificate holder
  • Two years for an ECD certificate holder

Programme Requirements

  • Option 1: NCQF Level 4, Certificate IV (BGCSE) or equivalent with a pass in English Language will study for 3 years.
  • Option 2: A holder of NCQF Level 5, Certificate V in Early Childhood Education or equivalent, with at least 120 credits will study for 2 years.
  • Special Entry: Admission may also be based on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), applied on a case by case as guided by the BOU RPL Policy. Candidates who do not have the minimum academic qualifications stated above but have two years relevant work experience in a related field, will be considered upon satisfying the requirements of the School’s Board that might include an entrance interview.

  • Play and Pedagogy (EPAP 612)
  • Language Acquisition and Development (ELAD 612)
